TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology recorded three Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week awards, including a sweep of both baseball honors, in results released Monday by the league office.
Junior Drew Schnitz was named HCAC Baseball Hitter of the Week, senior Karson Nixon captured HCAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week honors, and junior Andrew Okruch was named the conference Field Event Athlete of the Week.
Schnitz helped the Engineers finish 3-1 last week by recording team-high totals of a .500 batting average, a .588 on-base percentage and a .583 slugging average last week. He finished 6-12 from the plate with one double, four walks, and two RBI. Schnitz helped Rose-Hulman complete a three-game sweep at Bluffton last weekend after a narrow loss to Franklin on Tuesday.
Nixon tossed a complete game three-hit shutout to lift Rose-Hulman past Bluffton 5-0 on Saturday. He allowed just three singles and one walk with 10 strikeouts in the performance. Nixon improved his overall record to 5-1 on the season by holding the Beavers to just a .100 batting average in the victory.
Okruch turned in one of the best discus throws in all of NCAA Division III at the Indiana Division III Championships Saturday to earn Field Athlete of the Week honors. The junior recorded the No. 3 discus throw in NCAA Division III this season with a mark of 166' 6", placing second in the event. His efforts also included eighth-place finishes in the hammer and shot put.
The baseball team travels to Franklin on Tuesday and heads to Defiance for a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday. The track and field squad hosts the Rose-Hulman Twilight Meet on Friday at the William Welch Track and Field Complex.
