TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology seniors Austin Swenson and Austin Webb were named Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Players of the Week after helping lead their teams to key victories last week.
Swenson was named Football Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts in Rose-Hulman's 42-19 win over Bluffton that put Rose-Hulman in control of its own destiny for its first trip to the NCAA Division III playoffs.
Webb earned Men's Soccer Player of the Week honors after scoring goals in Rose-Hulman's wins over Hanover and Franklin that secured a perfect 9-0 conference regular season and the top seed for this week's league tournament.
Swenson passed for four touchdowns and rushed for two more in the first six possessions of the game, leading Rose-Hulman to a critical win over Bluffton. Swenson finished 18-27 for 208 yards and four TDs through the air, and rushed for 109 yards and two TDs. His efforts included a career-long 73-yard touchdown run and three touchdown passes to junior Raymond Burtnick.
Swenson helped guide the Rose-Hulman offense to 519 yards of total offense against a team that entered the game in a four-way battle for the NCAA Division III playoffs. Rose-Hulman's win, combined with Franklin defeating Mount St. Joseph on Saturday, put the Fightin' Engineers in control of the standings.
The award marks Rose-Hulman's third consecutive week with the HCAC Offensive Player of the Week. Swenson was honored for his efforts against Manchester and Bluffton, and Stanley Hogan III captured the award for his performance at Franklin.
Webb scored three goals to help Rose-Hulman defeat Franklin 4-0 and top Hanover 2-0 to cap a perfect HCAC regular season. Webb had the game winner at Hanover and scored two goals in the victory over Franklin.
The effort capped a strong week for Webb, who earned a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team last Thursday. He currently leads the team with 10 goals and 23 points this season.
The football team needs a win over Earlham on Nov. 12 to secure its first trip to the NCAA Division III playoffs. Men's soccer hosts Mount St. Joseph in the HCAC Semifinal Round on Wednesday and would host the title game on Saturday with a win over the Lions. Rose-Hulman seeks its fourth straight trip to the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament.
