TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology had a 10-game Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball winning streak snapped in a 5-2 extra inning loss to Defiance College on Saturday at Art Nehf Field.
Rose-Hulman trailed 2-0 in the bottom of the ninth, before rallying to force extra innings. Drew Schnitz started the rally with a one-out single and advanced to second on a walk. Koby Close drove home the first run with an RBI ground out, before Marcus Wechselberger tied the score by bringing home Trey Lewis on a game tying single with two outs.
Defiance answered with three runs in the 10th inning to capture the victory. Ian Grant took the hard-luck loss after allowing no earned runs in nine-plus innings of work. Troy Konwinski tossed a scoreless 1.1 innings to pick up the win for Defiance, after Dave Blanch allowed just four hits in a strong 8.2 inning performance.
Wechselberger led the Rose-Hulman offense with two singles and one RBI. Schnitz added a single and scored once, and Zach Trusk had a double. Tanner Stippich led the Defiance offense with two RBIs.
Prior to the game, Rose-Hulman honored its 2017 senior class of seven. This year's seniors include Jonathan Banks, Close, Ben Hoffman, Schnitz, Chris Sokoloff, Cody Sunderhaus and Trusk. The senior class also presented head coach Jeff Jenkins with an engraved bat to commemmorate his 700th win at Rose-Hulman last weekend.
