TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology received votes in the 2016 D3football.com preseason national top 25 poll, in results released by the national website.
Rose-Hulman received 14 votes in the D3football.com top 25 preseason poll after finishing 8-2 last season for the team's best record since 1988. This marks the first time in over 25 years that Rose-Hulman has received votes in a national preseason football top 25 poll.
The Fightin' Engineers return six starters on offense, highlighted by senior school record setting quarterback Austin Swenson. Rose-Hulman also returns 10 starters off a defensive unit that led the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference in fewest yards allowed last season.
Rose-Hulman joined Franklin College as the two Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference teams receiving votes in the D3football.com national top 25 poll. Defending national champion Mount Union is ranked No. 1 nationally, followed by Linfield, Wisconsin-Whitewater, St. Thomas and Mary Hardin-Baylor. The top four teams all received first place votes.
Rose-Hulman opens the 2016 season at home against Illinois College on Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. The home schedule also includes matchups with Anderson (Oct. 1), Manchester (Oct. 15), Bluffton (Oct. 29) and Earlham (Nov. 12). Rose-Hulman tied for second in the conference standings last season after setting five team school records, three individual school records and nine career school records.
