TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology student-athletes combined for three Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week awards, in results released Monday by the league office.
Junior Brandon Benedict was named HCAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the second consecutive week. Senior Taylor Lockhart captured HCAC Softball Pitcher of the Week honors, and junior Zach Trusk was named HCAC Baseball Hitter of the Week.
Benedict finished 6-0 at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions and compiled a 5-1 mark at No. 1 doubles to lead men's tennis to a 5-1 team record in Florida last week. Benedict swept all six singles opponents, including a 6-2, 7-6 win over the No. 2 singles player from NCAA Divison I Loyola of Maryland. He lost just one set in six singles matches. In doubles, Brandon teamed with Georges Adam for a 5-1 record, including a win against Loyola of Maryland.
Lockhart finished 4-1 in five starts in the pitching circle, recording a 0.41 earned run average and five complete games on the Rose-Hulman spring trip to Florida. She pitched 34 innings, allowing 28 hits and just two walks with 32 strikeouts. Lockhart also tossed three consecutive shutouts during the week.
Trusk batted .571 with a 1.000 slugging average and a .593 on-base percentage during the last five games of Rose-Hulman’s spring trip last week. He finished 12-21 at the plate with three doubles, two home runs, nine runs scored and seven RBIs to lead Rose-Hulman’s offense in a 2-3 team performance last week. Trusk capped the week with a four-hit performance in a 10-inning loss to Rhode Island College.
The men's tennis team stands 6-3 overall and hosts Franklin on Saturday and Manchester on Sunday. The softball team finished 6-4 in Florida and hosts Greenville on Saturday and Blackburn on Sunday. The baseball team has a 4-3 mark and hosts Carthage on Saturday and North Central on Sunday.
