TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman men's soccer team will advance to their fourth straight HCAC Championship Game after defeating No. 4 seed Mount St. Joseph 3-1 in the HCAC Semifinals on Wednesday night.
Senior Ben Lyon got involved early in the match on the offensive end and gave Rose-Hulman a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute when he scored his eighth goal of the season. Dieter Schultz picked up the assist on the Lyon goal.
The Fightin' Engineers continued to control possession of the ball and in the 20th minute Schultz sent a cross into the box that was then fired into the back of the net by senior Alex Jansen. The goal was Jansen's sixth of the year and it gave the Fightin' Engineers a 2-0 lead. RHIT would head into halftime up 2-0.
In the second period of play, Lyon scored his second goal of the match and his ninth of the season on a Rose-Hulman counter in the 76th minute. Charles Lynch got credit for the assist on the Lyon goal.
Mount St. Joseph scored late in the 86th minute, but the Rose-Hulman defense held on to secure the victory.
Schultz, a graduate senior, has set the Rose-Hulman single season record for assists in a season with 13. Schultz surpassed the previous mark of 10 held by Clint Vatterrodt and John Munson. On Wednesday, Schultz became the all-time assist leader in Rose-Hulman history with two helpers in the match bringing his career total to 26. The previous record was 24 held by Clint Vatterrodt.
With the win Rose-Hulman improved to 14-5 on the year. The win puts the men in the HCAC Championship Game which is to be played on Saturday November 5 at 1 p.m. at Intramural Field.
No. 1 seed Rose-Hulman will host No. 3 seed Hanover College. The Panthers upset No. 2 seed Transylvania 2-1 in 2 OT.
