Kowalkowski, Webb & HC Helliwell Lead HCAC Honors

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's soccer team earned numerous postseason awards on Thursday afternoon.  Seven different Fightin' Engineers and Head Coach Sean Helliwell picked up all-conference honors for their outstanding play and leadership during the 2016 season. 

Highlighting the awards for Rose-Hulman were top honors earned by senior Nick Kowalkowski, junior Austin Webb, and Helliwell. 

Kowalkowski was named to the All-HCAC 1st Team and was also named Defensive Most Valuable Player.  The 6'3" defender started all 83 games in his Rose-Hulman career and also won the Defensive MVP award in 2015.  Defensively, Kowalkowski helped anchor a Rose-Hulman defense that allowed just three goals against HCAC opponents this sesason and posted a 0.61 Goal Against Average.  Kowalkowski earned two All-HCAC 1st Team selections during his RHIT career.

Junior Austin Webb earned All-HCAC 1st Team honors as well and was named Offensive Most Valuable Player.  He started all 20 games this fall and has started 62 out of the 63 games he has played in his Rose-Hulman career.  Throughout the fall, Webb netted 10 goals, two of which were game-winners.  He also assisted on three goals in 2016.  Webb's 10 goals led the Rose-Hulman offense this season and those 10 goals ranked tied for 3rd in the HCAC.  Overall, this was Webb's third all-conference selection.

Head Coach Sean Helliwell was named Coach of the Year for the seventh time in the last nine seasons.  Helliwell led the Fightin' Engineers to a first-place finish in Heartland play with a perfect 9-0-0 record.  Rose-Hulman advanced to HCAC Championship Game for the fourth consecutive season.  The team finished 14-6 in 2016.  Coach Helliwell has an overall record of 115-47-26 at the helm of the men's program. 

Senior Ben Lyon was named to the All-HCAC 1st Team on Thursday afternoon.  The forward scored nine goals and added two assists in 2016.  Lyon registered three game-winning goals this season as well.  He ranks tied for 7th in Rose-Hulman history with 28 career goals and sits in 7th place all-time in school history with 63 points.  This was Lyon's third All-HCAC 1st Team selection. 

Defender Brad Rostron garnered All-HCAC 1st Team honors as well.  The senior helped lead a defensive back line that recorded 12 shutouts this season.  Rostron also scored one goal and recorded two assists this fall.  He was also named to the all-sportsmanship team.  This was Rostron's first all-conference selection.

Both Turner Perkins and Dieter Schultz were named to the All-HCAC First Team.  Perkins, a midfielder, has started all 63 matches of his career.  He netted four goals this year and also had one assist.  Perkins was named to the All-HCAC 1st Team in 2015 and to the All-HCAC 2nd Team in 2014.  Dieter Schultz started all 20 games this season for the Fightin' Engineers and led the conference with 13 assists.  Those 13 assists set the Rose-Hulman single season record for assists.  The graduate senior is the all-time assist leader in Rose-Hulman history with 26 career helpers.  The was Schultz's second career all-conference selection.

Alex Jansen rounded out the postseason accolades for RHIT.  The senior was named to the All-HCAC 2nd Team.  He started all 20 games this season and scored six goals this year, three of which were game-winners.  Jansen also assisted on one goal.  This was Jansen's second career selection to the All-HCAC 2nd Team. 

Defender Trevor Bednarek was named to the all-honorable mention team.  Both Turner Perkins and Austin Webb were named the CoSIDA NCAA Division III Academic All-District VII Men's Soccer Team back on October 27.
