TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's soccer won their third straight Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference match Wednesday night, defeating the Anderson University Ravens 2-1.
Rose-Hulman controlled the ball early in the contest and it was the Fightin' Engineers who got on the scoreboard first. Goalie Michael Lawrence's goal kick was booted down the field and flicked on by Will McGowen. McGowen found a streaking Michael Simmons who finished the play for his second goal of the season.
Late in the first half, the Ravens equalized after Sean Cain scored his second goal of the season in the 39th minute. Jacob Pokorski picked up his HCAC-leading ninth assist of 2017. The game would be tied at the intermission 1-1.
In the second half, Anderson controlled possession of the ball early and tested the Rose-Hulman defense. Michael Lawrence came up with several acrobatic saves to preserve the 1-1 tie. Lawrence finished the match with eight saves.
Late substitution Ross Klauer provided the heroics for the Fightin' Engineers. In the 79th minute, Klauer fired a left-footed shot that squeaked by a diving Brandon Weer, giving Rose-Hulman a 2-1 lead with 11 minutes left on the clock. Trevor Bednarek picked up the assist on the goal. It was the first goal of the season for Klauer. The Rose-Hulman defense would hold for the final minutes of the game, securing the 2-1 victory.
RHIT improved to 8-4-1. 3-1-0, HCAC. Anderson fell to 7-6-1, 2-2-0 HCAC. The Fightin' Engineers will play on Saturday October 14th at home against Defiance. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
