TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Coming off the best season in program history, the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's basketball team is the unanimous favorite to win the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship in a preseason poll of league coaches released Tuesday.
Rose-Hulman finished 23-4 last season and rattled off 18 consecutive wins before falling in the championship game of the HCAC Tournament at Bluffton last February. The Fightin' Engineers earned a share of the first conference regular season championship in school history before losing a coin toss for hosting rights in the league tournament.
The Fightin' Engineers were chosen first on all 10 coaches ballots by returning eight of its top 10 scorers from last year's squad. Ally Bromenschenkel was named HCAC Freshman of the Year last season and was the team's leading scorer at 8.1 points per game. Josie Schmidt, Brianna Gliesmann and Alyzia Dilworth rounded out the top four scorers last season and all return. Schmidt joined Bromenschenkel on the all-HCAC team.
The 15-player roster includes 10 returning varsity letter winners and three newcomers. Rose-Hulman has also received a vote in the preseason d3hoops.com women's top 25 preseason poll for the first time in program history.
Rose-Hulman has created the most ambitious non-conference schedule in program history. Three freshman round out the 2016-17 squad.erence schedule in program history for 2016-17. The Fightin' Engineers play in the DePauw Tip-off Tournament, the North Park Tournament and face national powers Illinois Wesleyan and Chicago, along with a trip to St. Mary-of-the-Woods.
The 10-game home schedule begins Wednesday Dec. 7 against Franklin. The season tips off Nov. 18 with a matchup against Texas-Dallas at DePauw.
