TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology will travel to St. Louis to face Wheaton (Ill.) in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament on Friday night, in pairings released by the NCAA on Monday.
Rose-Hulman and Wheaton (Ill.) will square off at 5:30 p.m. Central Time on Friday in the NCAA Tournament First Round Game at Washington University (Mo.). The winner will advance to the second round, which takes place Saturday at 7 p.m. Central Time.
Rose-Hulman stands 24-3 on the season and enters the NCAA Tournament with a 14-game winning streak. The Fightin' Engineers are making their first trip to the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament after winning the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Championship Game 50-40 over Transylvania University on Saturday at Hulbert Arena.
Wheaton has a 23-4 record and is ranked No. 24 nationally in the latest d3hoops.com weekly national poll. The Thunder defeated Illinois Wesleyan for their eighth straight win to capture the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championship on Saturday to secure their NCAA Tournament bid. Rose-Hulman has played three CCIW teams this season, recording wins over North Central and North Park along with a loss to Illinois Wesleyan.
Rose-Hulman has won back-to-back HCAC regular season championships, earning an outright title in 2017 after capturing a co-championship in 2016. The Fightin' Engineers have the second longest current home winning streak in NCAA Division III Women's Basketball at 25 games, behind only the 62 games of defending national champion Thomas More.
The Fightin' Engineers also received seven points in the most recent d3hoops.com national top 25 poll, the most for the women's basketball team in program history.
Sophomore Ally Bromenschenkel is the leading scorer of Rose-Hulman's balanced offensive attack. Bromenschenkel averages 12.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. HCAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player Alyzia Dilworth is second on the team in scoring at 8.2 points per contest.
The remaining starting lineup includes senior Josie Schmidt (8.1 ppg); sophomore Abby Bromenschenkel (7.4 ppg); and senior Abbie Marshall (5.8 ppg). Leading scorers off the bench have included Taylor Graham (6.5 ppg) and Chiarra Franklin (4.4 ppg).
Head coach Jon Prevo has led the team to a new school record with 24 victories this season, due in large part to one of the nation's best defenses. The Fightin' Engineers stand No. 3 nationally in scoring defense (45.7 ppg) and No. 7 in field goal percentage defense (31.1%).
Rose-Hulman's defense has held its opponent to under 50 points for 10 consecutive games. The team has held the opponent under 50 points on 18 total occasions this season.
The winner of Friday night's game will advance to the NCAA Division III Tournament second round of 32 with a contest in St. Louis on Saturday night. The winner of Rose-Hulman/Wheaton will face either host Washington University (Mo.) or St. Norbert on Saturday at 7 p.m. Central Time.
Ticket prices have been set at $7 for adults and $5 for students (with student ID), seniors, and children. All ticketholders must use cash to purchase tickets. An ATM is nearby for those individuals needing to acquire cash for tickets.
The tournament also includes sectional rounds on Mar. 10-11, before the Women's Basketball National Championship is held at Calvin College on Mar. 17-18.
