TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology relied on four first half goals and a strong defensive effort to top Principia College 5-0 in the women's soccer opener for both schools on Thursday night at the Engineer Intramural Field.
Five different players scored for the Engineers, highlighted by four goals in the first 27 minutes. Jessica Wells put Rose-Hulman on the board in the eighth minute on an assist from Madeline Romeo. Six minutes later, Romeo found the back of the net on a pass from Samantha Jacobs to make the score 2-0.
Defensively, Carli Weinberg and Chiarra Franklin combined for the shutout in goal. Both keepers recorded four saves each. Rose-Hulman also had a 9-3 edge in corner kicks. Libby Lewis paced Principia with 13 saves in goal.
Rose-Hulman moved to 1-0 and hosts Kenyon on Saturday at 3 p.m. Principia stands 0-1 on the season.
