Women's Soccer Easily Captures Opener

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology relied on four first half goals and a strong defensive effort to top Principia College 5-0 in the women's soccer opener for both schools on Thursday night at the Engineer Intramural Field.

Five different players scored for the Engineers, highlighted by four goals in the first 27 minutes.  Jessica Wells put Rose-Hulman on the board in the eighth minute on an assist from Madeline Romeo.  Six minutes later, Romeo found the back of the net on a pass from Samantha Jacobs to make the score 2-0.

Kirby Kern put Rose-Hulman ahead 3-0 in the 23rd minute on a pass from Stef PanzenhagenMelissa Rivera capped the first half scoring with a goal in the 28th minute on a pass from Maddy Twetten.

In the second half, Corie Ewoldt scored in the 63rd minute on a pass from Miranda Chastain.  Rose-Hulman outshot Principia 34-10 in the match, with 17 shots in each half.

Defensively, Carli Weinberg and Chiarra Franklin combined for the shutout in goal.  Both keepers recorded four saves each.  Rose-Hulman also had a 9-3 edge in corner kicks.  Libby Lewis paced Principia with 13 saves in goal.

Rose-Hulman moved to 1-0 and hosts Kenyon on Saturday at 3 p.m.  Principia stands 0-1 on the season.
