TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's tennis team has been picked to finish second in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference this season, in a preseason poll of league coaches released August 25.
Rose-Hulman returns four of its top six players from last season and has added four new upperclassmen and two freshman to the 2015-16 roster. The Fightin' Engineers finished 11-3 overall and 7-1 in conference play last season. Rose-Hulman also finished second in the conference regular season and tournament standings for the second consecutive year.
Sophomore Bella Evans leads the four returning starters after finishing a perfect 13-0 in singles play last season. Junior Lauren Edwards finished 9-3 overall in singles play, while senior Lauren Miller (9-3) and junior Sydney Short (9-2) provided significant depth. Junior Becca Stanley also finished 3-1 in singles play last year.
In doubles play, Edwards and Evans combined for an 8-3 record as the primary No. 2 doubles squad. Miller and Short were 10-3 at the primarily No. 3 spot.
Hanover was picked as the preseason favorite with 80 points and eight first-place votes. Rose-Hulman was chosen second at 64 points, with Franklin earning the third spot and the final first-place vote. Transylvania, Anderson, Manchester, Earlham, Mount St. Joseph and Defiance rounded out the poll.
Rose-Hulman opens the regular season on Sept. 5 with matches against Oakland City and IU-Southeast on the road. The HCAC schedule starts with a showdown at league preseason favorite Hanover on Sept. 12. The first match welcomes Mount St. Joseph to campus on Homecoming weekend (Sept. 19).
