TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's tennis team has been picked as the preseason favorite to win the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship this season, in a preseason poll of league coaches released August 22.
Rose-Hulman reached the NCAA Division III Tournament last season after finishing 14-4 overall and winning the HCAC Tournament championship. The Fightin' Engineers tied a single-season school record for wins and made the second NCAA Tournament appearance in program history during the 2016-17 campaign.
The 2017 team features the return of the top three singles players and top two doubles teams from last season's squad. Anna Thompson was named HCAC Tournament Most Valuable Player, first-team all-conference and league Freshman of the Year to pace the returning players. Junior Bella Evans and sophomore Naomi Bhagat also captured all-league recognition last season.
The overall roster features nine returning letter winners from the league title squad, along with one talented freshman. The 2017 campaign begins with a trip to the DePauw Doubles Invitational on Sept. 2-3, before regular season match play starts Sept. 9 at Defiance.
