Women's Tennis Tops Transy, Moves to HCAC Semifinals

HCAC TOURNAMENT PROGRAM

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology battled through a nearly four-hour match to defeat Transylvania University 5-3 in the opening round of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Tournament on Friday night at West Indy Racquet Club.

The Fightin' Engineers improve to 7-4 on the season with the win and will face top-seeded Hanover College in the semifinal round on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Rose-Hulman relied on wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles flights to jump out to an early 2-1 lead.  Lauren Miller and Lauren Edwards combined for an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles, and Becca Stanley joined Sydney Short for an 8-4 victory at No. 3 doubles.

In singles play, Rose-Hulman won at the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 positions to secure the win.  Miller earned a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 win at the No. 3 position.  Edwards won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4, and Short captured a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6.

The winner of Saturday's semifinal match will advance to Sunday's 10 a.m. championship match against the winner of the Franklin vs. Anderson match.  The champion of the six-team tournament will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
