17 First-Place Finishes Lead Swimming Effort vs. Valpo

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology relied on 17 first-place performances to earn a convincing men's victory and a narrow women's loss against NCAA Division I Valparaiso University in swimming and diving action at the Sports and Recreation Center on Thursday night.

The men's squad earned a 192-99 victory over Valparaiso, while the women's meet came down to the final event before the Division I Crusaders earned a 137-134 win.

Individually, senior Orion Martin led the men's performance with three individual first-place finishes.  Martin won the 100-freestyle (47.32 seconds), the 100-butterfly (50.10) and the 200-butterfly (1:54.69).

Senior Paul Hintz and senior Josh Maurer won two events each for the Fightin' Engineer men.  Hintz won the 200-freestyle (1:48.34) and the 500-freestyle (4:59.13), while Maurer swept the one-meter (199.43) and three-meter (195.14) diving competitions.

Other individual winners for the men's squad included Cam Gill in the 50-freestyle (22.04) and Tai Enrico (2:01.63) in the 200-backstroke.

Rose-Hulman also swept the 200-medley and 200-freestyle relay events.  The team of Gill, Nick Samra, Pierce Bartine and Tyler Sariscsany won the 200-medley relay in 1:38.87.  Martin, Gill, Sariscsany and Bartine combined for a 200-freestyle win with a mark of 1:27.29.

On the women's side, junior Ellie Hong won three events to lead six total winners.  Hong captured first-place finishes in the 50-freestyle (25.31), the 100-freestyle (55.10) and the 100-backstroke (59.22).

Senior Regen Foote brought home first-place finishes in one-meter (196.65) and three-meter (241.42) diving.  Freshman Melissa Arbelaez added a victory in the 200-backstroke (2:17.96).

Rose-Hulman returns to action at the Transylvania University held at the University of Kentucky Natatorium on Dec. 5-6.
