FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology battled NAIA opponent Indiana Tech in a tightly contested match that featured four three-set singles matches, before the hosts captured a 7-2 victory on Friday afternoon.
Freshman Cam Metzger and freshman Derek Benedict led the performance with Rose-Hulman victories in singles play. Metzger won at No. 3 singles by a 6-0, 2-6, 7-6 count after capturing a third-set tiebreaker 7-2. Benedict also won in a third-set tiebreaker at No. 5 by a score of 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (4).
Two other singles matches went the full distance, as junior Matt Conrad fell at the No. 4 spot 5-7, 6-3, 6-7 (4) in a third-set tiebreaker and sophomore Georges Adam dropped a narrow 6-7 (5), 6-2, 4-6 match at the No. 2 singles spot.
Rose-Hulman stands 6-4 on the season and returns to action in a matchup of two squads undefeated in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday. The Fightin' Engineers (6-4, 4-0 HCAC) travel to a Defiance squad that is 3-0 in league matches. Rose-Hulman returns to Fort Wayne to face NCAA Division I IPFW at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
