LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology won its eighth consecutive Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men's outdoor track and field championship with perhaps the most dominating performance in league history on Friday and Saturday at Transylvania University.
The men's squad combined for 10 individual conference championships and 39 top-five performances to score 311.5 points and win its eighth straight league title. Anderson University came home second with 93 points, followed by Bluffton with 69.5.
The 311.5 points scored by the Rose-Hulman men represents an all-time Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference record. The Fightin' Engineer men also became the first men's squad to sweep the 'triple crown' of cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field in the same year.
On the women's side, Rose-Hulman placed fifth in the team scoring and earned three event championships. Manchester won the team score with 173.5 points, followed by Franklin (161), Hanover (111.5), Transylvania and Rose-Hulman (65) rounding out the top five.
The men's squad combined for six running event and four field event championships over the two days of competition. Senior Blake Schulthies and sophomore Andrew Okruch led the conference champions with two titles each. Schulthies won the pole vault (13' 11 1/4") and 400-meter hurdles (54.66), while Okruch captured top honors in the discus throw (157' 8") and shot put (49' 5 3/4").
Other running event champions included junior Sam Sobczak in the 10,000-meter run (32:05.22), freshman Matt Hill in the 5,000 meters (15:32.42), junior Brandon Loyer in the 1,500 meters (4:06.25), sophomore Brendon Mattiuz in the 800-meters (1:57.62) and freshman Josh Hennig in the 400-meters (49.95). In field events, senior Zac Erba won the hammer throw conference title with a toss of 169' 5".
On the women's side, Rose-Hulman won one individual running event, one individual field event and one relay running event championships. Freshman Gabi Razma won the triple jump title with a leap of 35' 11 1/4". Junior Addie Johnson won the 400-meter hurdles title in 1:06.68. The 4-x-400 meter relay team of Christine Harper, Razma, Victoria Heckenlively and Johnson wrapped up the meet with a winning time of 4:03.74.
The Rose-Hulman men recorded an impressive string of top-five finishes in the shot put (1-2-3), discus (1-2-3-5) and javelin (2-3-4-5) to bolster the team score.
The men's second-place finishes included five field event, three running event, and two relay runner-ups. In field events, second-place finishers included senior Austin Schulthies in the javelin (176' 6") and the discus (156' 4"); sophomore Nathan Green in the pole vault (13' 11 1/4"); senior Vashon Solomon in the triple jump (43' 5 1/4") and sophomore Charles Spaeth in the shot put (48' 6 1/4").
Senior Ryan Meyer tallied runner-up performances in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:38.03) and the 5,000-meter run (15:32.90) in running events. Blake Schulthies added a second place in the 110-hurdles in 15.42 seconds.
The 4-x-100 meter relay team of Adam Wilson, Philip Koranteng, Isaiah Smith and Brayden Betz came home second in 42.90 seconds. The 4-x-400 meter relay squad of Hennig, Smith, Brendan Smyth and Blake Schulthies capped the meet with a second place finish in 3:22.67.
Third-place finishers were led by freshman Josh Himes in the shot put (45' 2 1/2") and discus throw (142' 1"); Erba in the javelin throw (163' 5"); Hill in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:43.89); Koranteng in the 110-meter hurdles (15.43); and Smyth in the triple jump (42' 10 3/4"). On the women's side, Razma added a third-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 16' 1 1/2".
Coming in fourth place for the men on day one were Joe Carroll in the hammer throw (154' 0"), Chandler Harkins in the 1,500 meters (4:13.09), Hennig in the triple jump (42' 2 3/4"); Alex Leversen in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:50.89), Blake Schulthies in the javelin throw (155' 0"), Lucas Schulthies in the pole vault (13' 5 1/4"), Sobczak in the 5,000-meter run (15:37.05), and Solomon in the long jump (21' 5 1/2").
On the women's side, fourth-place finishers included Heckenlively in the 400 meters (1:01.68) and sophomore Ava Paruleski added in the high jump (4' 11").
Fifth-place men's finishers included Koranteng in the 200 meters (22.97), Lucas Schulthies in the javelin (154' 5"), Spaeth in the discus (136' 7"), Addison Williams in the 10,000-meter run (32:38.04), and Wilson in the 100 meters (11.44).
Women's fifth-place finishers included junior Sheldan Falls in the women's triple jump (33' 6 1/2") and Razma in the 200 meters (27.27).
Rose-Hulman has now won 13 consecutive men's track and field conference championships between the indoor and outdoor seasons. The outdoor streak began in 2008, and the indoor streak began during the inaugural event in 2011. Individuals from the squad will compete at the Billy Hayes Invitational at Indiana University on Saturday May 2.
