INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's tennis team defeated Transylvania University for the second time in ten days, defeating the Pioneers 5-1 en route to a berth in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Tournament finals.
On April 25, the Fightin' Engineers toppled the Pioneers 8-1 to clinch the program's first ever outright HCAC regular season championships. On Saturday, Rose-Hulman needed just six complete flights to clinch a victory due to matches being played to decision in postseason play.
Rose-Hulman's first and second doubles teams both notched their 10th dual match victories of the year. Sophomores Brandon Benedict and Georges Adam dispatched Robert Albrecht and Zachary Meikle 8-0 at first doubles while junior Matt Conrad and freshman Cam Metzger won 8-2 at second doubles.
Transylvania won its lone match point at third doubles.
Adam and Conrad dropped just three games in singles play. Adam defeated Dylan Connor 6-2, 6-1 at second singles while Conrad did the reverse, winning 6-1, 6-2 at four singles over Meikle. The Engineers won their final point of the match at fifth singles as freshman Derek Benedict improved to 13-4 on the season with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Reza Haider.
As noted above, the other three singles matches were unfinished due to the match being played to decision.
Rose-Hulman (12-5, 8-0 HCAC) will face Earlham (11-9, 6-2 HCAC) in the tournament championship. Earlham, the No. 3 seed, defeated Franklin 5-3. The match is slated to begin at 10 a.m.
