ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's tennis team lost a hard-fought match to Carthage College 5-1 in the opening round of the NCAA III Men's Tennis Championships on Friday.
The match was Rose-Hulman's first in the NCAA III Men's Tennis Championships in program history.
Sophomores Brandon Benedict and Georges Adam won their first doubles match 8-5 over Pawel Jaworski and Jordan Verbauwhede. The victory was the pair's 11th of the season. Carthage (20-6) won second doubles 8-3.
The third doubles flight proved to be the closest flight in the match. Freshmen Tyler Haas and Derek Benedict led Ryan Jump and Alex Ferruzzi 7-6, but dropped the last three games as the Fightin' Engineers entered singles play down 2-1.
The Red Men won fourth, fifth, and sixth singles in straight sets to clinch the match. The top three singles matches remained unfinished, but the Engineers had a set advantage at first and second singles while freshman Cam Metzger split sets at third singles.
Rose-Hulman concludes its 2015 campaign with a 13-6 record. The Engineers went undefeated in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play, winning eight matches in the regular season and two in the conference tournament.
