TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology won 13 events and recorded 21 top-two finishes in a strong performance at the Engineer Twilight Meet on Friday night at the William Welch Track and Field Complex.
Rose-Hulman outdistanced Wabash for top honors in the team scoring in the nine-team event. The Fightin' Engineer women came home third overall.
The men's squad relied on two individual with two first-place finishes each to pace the overall performance. Trey Sykes swept the long jump (21' 10 3/4") and triple jump (46' 9") events, while Adam Wilson won both the 100-meter (10.92) and 200-meter (22.40) dashes. Wilson tied a Rose-Hulman school record in the winning 100-meter performance.
On the women's side, freshman Debie Gedeon ran a historic 100-meter hurdle event to highlight the individual winners. Gedeon set a school record and a Cook Stadium record by winning the race in 14.46 seconds, the ninth best time in all of Division III this season. Sophomore Gabi Razma added a women's first place finish with a long jump mark of 36' 4 3/4".
Rose-Hulman also swept the 4-x-100 and 4-x-400 meter relay events to bolster the team score. The 4-x-100 meter team of Wilson, Tyler Duffy, Isaiah Smith and Josh Hennig won in 42.52 seconds. The 4-x-400 meter relay team of Brendan Smyth, Smith, Duffy and Hennig capped the meet with a winning mark of 3:20.68.
Running event winners also included Hennig in the 400-meter dash (49.41) and Smith in the 400-meter hurdles (54.93). Field event winners for Rose-Hulman included Kenton Hipsher in the high jump (6' 4 1/4"), Ben Wewe in the javelin throw (161' 5") and Nick Palmer in the pole vault (15' 1 3/4").
The performance also included six men's runner-up performances and two women's second-place finishes. Running event runner-ups included Hennig in the 200-meter dash (22.59), Matt Hill in the 3,000 meters (8:44.24) and Dimitris Valioulis in the 110-meter hurdles (15.44). Field event second-place finishers for the men included Eric Downing in the pole vault (14' 6"), Josh Himes in the hammer throw (153' 0") and Charles Spaeth in the shot put (50' 10 1/4").
On the women's side, second-place performers included Lindsey Fagerberg in the triple jump (35' 1") and Addie Johnson in the 400-meter hurdles (1:06.96). The women's 4-x-400 meter relay team of Razma, Victoria Heckenlively, Fagerberg and Johnson also came home second in 4:09.88.
Rose-Hulman returns to action at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships next Friday and Saturday at Bluffton University.
