RHIT Topped by No. 9 Carnegie Mellon in 2nd Round of NCAA Tournament

CHICAGO, Ill. - Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology was defeated by No. 9 Carnegie Mellon University in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the XS Tennis Center in Chicago.  

Carnegie Mellon topped RHIT by a final score of 5-0.  CMU will advance to tomorrow's regional championship match against the No. 7 University of Chicago Maroons.  The regional championship is slated for 12 p.m. CT. 

Rose-Hulman battled hard but fell in all three doubles matches.  The duo of Cam Metzger and Andre Adam fell to Daniel Levine and Chaz Downing at No. 1 doubles.  Ian Landwehr and Austin Perry dropped a hard-fought 8-5 decision at No. 2 doubles against Ray Poppana and Nicholas Calzolano.  Brendan Goldacker and Andrew Schiffman also dropped a close 8-5 decision at No. 3 doubles against Ben Ash and Robert Levin.  CMU completed the victory with wins at No. 3 and No. 5 singles.

Rose-Hulman's 2018 season came to an end with the loss to the Tartans.  RHIT finished with a 17-11 overall record.  The Fightin' Engineers went 17-5 against NCAA Division III competition this spring.  The 2018 season was highlighted by a fourth straight Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference title as well as a fourth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament.  In 2019, the Fightin' Engineers will look to extend their 39 match win streak against HCAC teams as the team looks for a fifth straight conference title.
