Fiacable, Thomas MVP Awards Lead Strong Performance at Indiana D-III

GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's and women's track and field teams combined to win 10 events in a strong performance at the Indiana Division III Championships at DePauw University on Saturday.

The men's squad came home second overall, led by two Athlete of the Meet performances.  Eric Fiacable was named Field Athlete of the Meet after winning the shot put (50' 3 1/4"), discus throw (149' 7") and hammer throw (185' 2").  Noah Thomas earned Track Athlete of the Meet honors after setting a school record to win the 100-meter dash (10.89 seconds) and running the fourth-fastest time in school history to win the 200-meters in a meet record time of 22.13 seconds.

On the women's side, the Fightin' Engineers came home fourth as a team.  Mary-Helen Shomba led the individual efforts by winning the 100-meter hurdles with the second-fastest time in school history and a meet record in 15.00 seconds.

Other event winners for Rose-Hulman included Aaron Lannoy in the 800-meter run (1:56.62); Nick Palmer in the pole vault (15' 3"); Nathan Schrader with a meet record in the javelin throw (195' 5"); and Trey Sykes in the triple jump (45' 9 3/4").

The Fightin' Engineers had a pair of runner-up performances on the women's side on Saturday.  Tina Rogers placed second in the 400-hurdles in the third-fastest time in school history (1:08.58), whie the 4-x-400 meter relay team of Kristin East, Clare Bruns, Dara Smith and Rogers finished in 4:10.05.

Third-place finishers on the women's side included Adekite Oladipupo in the long jump (15' 10 1/4"); Smith in the high jump (5' 0 1/4"); and Cassie Utley in the javelin (106' 3").

Sykes recorded a pair of third-place performances to help bolster the men's team score, running a 200-meter time of 22.34 seconds and a compiling a long jump mark of 20' 11 1/4".  He also joined Jacob Back, Thomas and Stephen Payne on the third-place 4-x-100 meter relay (42.50).

Other third-place men's finishers included Cameron Prisby in the pole vault (14' 9"); Will Thesken in the 800-meter run (1:58.73); and David Walbring in the shot put (46' 8 3/4").

Rose-Hulman will host its annual Twilight Meet at the William Welch Track and Field Complex on Friday.
