ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology split a pair of tight men's tennis matches against solid NCAA Division III Midwest foes on Saturday afternoon.
The Fightin' Engineers defeated Coe 5-3, after narrowly falling to Augustana (Ill.) 5-4 in a lengthy day of action.
Against Coe, Rose-Hulman won a pair of doubles matches and took home three singles wins to earn the victory. The No. 1 doubles team of Ian Landwehr and Austin Perry won 8-3, with the No. 3 doubles squad of Andrew Schiffman and Mark Slaninka also winning 8-3.
In singles play, Landwehr took home a three-set win at the No. 1 singles flight; Schiffman won in straight sets at No. 4 and Josh Giambattista won at No. 6 singles in straight seasons.
Earlier in the day, a lengthy and tight match ended with Augustana earning a narrow 5-4 win.
Rose-Hulman winners included Perry at No. 2 singles in three sets; Grant Stamper in straight sets at No. 5 singles; and Giambattista in straight sets at No. 6 singles.
In doubles action, the No. 1 team of Ian Landwehr and Perry earned a dramatic 18-16 tiebreak win to keep the Engineers in striking distance.
Rose-Hulman (1-3) returns to action at the Georgia Gwinnett Invitational in two weekends.
