TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's tennis team fell to Olivet Nazarene on Saturday afternoon with a 4-3 loss to the Tigers in their final pre-Florida tune-up match.
In doubles play,
Owen Reynolds and
Chris Lian held on for a big 7-6(8-6) victory at the #2 position, but the Tigers were able to pull out the match at #3 to clinch the doubles point.
In singles play, Rose-Hulman fell behind 3-0 with a pair of losses at #2 and #5 singles, but
Ephraim Guthrie got the Fightin' Engineers on the board as he cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win at #6 singles.
The Tigers had a chance to clinch the match in a third set tiebreak at both the #1 singles and #4 singles position, but the Fightin' Engineers slammed the door and tied the match a 3-3 with just one match remaining.
Joao Henrique Nossar came from behind with a 3-6, 6-4, 1-0(10-7) win at #1 singles, and
Ervin Perkowski picked up a 2-6, 6-4, 1-0(13-11) win at #4 singles to hold on late. However, the Tigers held on in the final spot and picked up the 4-3 win over Rose-Hulman.
With the loss, the Fightin' Engineers fall to 2-3 overall on the season with their third straight 4-3 defeat. The team returns to action on March 3 for a pair of matches in Orlando, Florida as they battle Allegheny and Concordia (WI).
