Matt Wilson enters his fifth year at Rose-Hulman and his fourth year as the head coach of the men's and women's tennis teams in the 2026-27 academic year.
Wilson had an outstanding season in his first year leading the Fightin' Engineers in 2024. The men's team claimed the HCAC regular season title and HCAC Tournament title to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the 10th time in school history. Rose-Hulman fell short to Illinois Tech in the first round of the tournament with a final score of 5-3. The women's team finished the regular season in second place entering the HCAC Tournament. The team ended their season after a loss to Transylvania in the championship match with a final of 5-3.
In his first season, he led six student-athletes to all-HCAC 1st team honors and four to all-HCAC honorable mention with Elijah Hadler earning Newcomer of the Year.
His second season featured similar success for the men’s team as they claimed the HCAC regular season title and HCAC Tournament title for the second consecutive year. Rose-Hulman fell 4-2 in the first round of the NCAA tournament against Greenville while three players earned all-HCAC 1st team honors with another three earning all-HCAC honorable mention.
Wilson’s women's team underwent a complete rebuild in 2025 as most starters from 2024 were lost due to graduation. Bringing in the largest individual recruiting class in Rose-Hulman women’s tennis history, the 2025 team brought home a second place finish in the HCAC regular season standings while falling in the HCAC Tournament semi-finals. With the team being led by a lineup of nearly all freshman, Lia Taylor earned Newcomer of the Year while two student-athletes took home all-HCAC 1st team honors with another three being named all-HCAC honorable mention.
The 2026 season brought immense success for Wilson and his team. His men’s team finished with 15 dual match wins that culminated in a third consecutive HCAC regular season and tournament championship and NCAA tournament appearance. The team also made history by reaching a program high ITA national ranking of 58 and being ranked as the #6 team in the NCAA Region VI rankings for the first time in school history. He also led 5 players to all-HCAC 1st team honors, including Tim Eckermann earning HCAC Player of the Year. Eckermann also earned an in-consideration spot in the NCAA Region VI singles rankings while Eckermann and his doubles partner, Chris Lian, were ranked as high as #5 in the doubles rankings. Wilson also earned HCAC Coach of the Year honors on the men’s side as well.
His 2026 women’s team also made school history by winning just the third HCAC Tournament Championship in school history and the first since 2016. The team finished as the #2 seed in the regular season, pulling the upset over the #1 seed Transylvania in the HCAC Championship. His team also finished with 13 dual match wins which comes in at third in the school’s history books in a single season. He also had Emerson Donaldson earn all-HCAC 1st team honors with another four players earning honorable mention. Paige Mills earned Newcomer of the Year, making it the second straight season that a member of the program earned the award.
