Dallas Kelsey completes his 3rd season as Rose-Hulman men's and women's tennis coach head coach during theĀ 2021-22 campaign.
Kelsey led the 2021 Rose-Hulman men's squad to its 6th consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament in his first full season as head coach.Ā The 2021 squad won the HCAC Tournament championship and featured four first-team all-conference selection.Ā TheĀ 2020 campaign was a shortened season against nationally ranked scholarships schools on a spring trip before Covid-19 canceled the remainder of the year.
On the women's side, Kelsey was named HCAC Women's Coach of the Year in 2020-21 after leading the team to a 5-3 record and a second-place finish in the league.Ā He coached four all-conference players for theĀ 2020-21 team, including HCAC Freshman of the Year Taylor Goldman.
Kelsey's overall coaching career features moreĀ than three decades of tennis coaching experience after a standout playing career at NCAA Division I Indiana State University.Ā He played the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles position at Indiana State in a career that featured athletic and academic All-American honors.Ā He was one of seven recipients in the Missouri Valley Conference to receive the "Missouri Valley Conference Medallion for Outstanding Academic and Athletic Achievement - the highest award given by the MVC."
His playing career has included rankings as high as No. 1 in Indiana men's open doubles play; No. 8 in Indiana men's open singles play; and No. 31 in the Midwest in singles.
Kelsey's coaching career includes time as a head coach at Terre Haute North, Terre Haute South and West Vigo high schools in the local Terre Haute community.Ā He spent six years as head girls and assistant boys coach at Terre Haute South from 1993-99; served as head boys coach at Terre Haute North from 2017 until coming to Rose-Hulman; and was the head girls coach at West Vigo from 2018 until coming to Rose-Hulman.
Kelsey's additional tennis experience includes serving as the treasurer, co-director, morning site director and lead instructor for the Terre Haute Junior Tennis Association since 2014.Ā
The Alexandria, Indiana native earned both his bachelor's (physical education K-12 in 1990) and master's (recreation and sport management in 1996) degrees at Indiana State University.Ā His career also includes time as an athletic administrator, as Kelsey served as athletic director at Terre Haute North High School from 2000-02.Ā He also spent 13 years as a principal within the Vigo County School Corporation from 2002-15.
Kelsey took over for Dan Hopkins, who served as the Rose-Hulman men's head tennis coach for 31 seasons and the women's head coach for 18 years at Rose-Hulman.Ā Hopkins led the Fightin' Engineers to a men's tennis record of 313-277, including six HCAC regular season conference championships and appearances in the last five NCAA Division III Tournaments.Ā The men's squad also won NCAA Division III Tournament matches in 2017 and 2019.Ā On the women's side, Hopkins compiled a career record of 159-138 highlighted by two regular season conference titles and appearances in the 2011 and 2017 NCAA Division III Tournaments.Ā Ā
