Jordan Goslee Perfect Game Leads Rose-Hulman to Sweep

TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- It was a perfect day for Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology junior softball pitcher Jordan Goslee (St. Joseph, Mich.) on Sunday afternoon.

Goslee tossed the first perfect game in Fightin' Engineer softball history in the nightcap and finished a perfect 6-6 at the plate on the day as the team earned two victories over Hanover College.

Goslee threw a five-inning perfect game in the nightcap with eight strikeouts to key an 8-0 Rose-Hulman victory.  She also finished a perfect 3-3 at the plate with three singles, after smashing three doubles in three at bats in the team's 10-1 victory in the opener.

"I've been trying to throw a no-hitter for a while, but it feels really good to throw a perfect game.  I tried not to think about it too much during the game.  My goal isn't to strike everyone out, but to let them put the ball into play and rely on our defense.  That makes it a team game, and we did that today," said Goslee.

The effort was the second no-hitter in Rose-Hulman history, after Tabatha Doughty tossed a no-hitter during the 2001 season.  The effort was the first no-hitter under Engineer head coach Brian Shearer.

"Jordan has proven that she is an excellent pitcher and deserves all the accolades that comes her way.  I feel privileged to witness a no-hitter as a coach, let alone a perfect game," said Shearer.

Rose-Hulman snapped a scoreless tie with three runs in the fourth inning and five in the fifth frame to invoke the NCAA Division III run-rule in the 8-0 victory.  Freshman Meghan Canary (Coatesville/South Putnam) joined Goslee with three hits.  Junior Brittany Bernthold (Fisherville, Ky./Eastern) and sophomore Kayla Yano (Ontario, Ore.) each had a pair of hits in the nightcap.

The contest also featured the first collegiate hit for junior Amanda Cochren (Winslow/Pike Central), who later added a sacrifice fly on the afternoon.

In the opener, Rose-Hulman scored seven times in the third inning to snap a 1-1 tie and claim a 10-1 victory.  Sophomore Kyla Lutz (Tennyson/Boonville) finished 3-3 with two doubles, three runs scored and the complete-game pitching victory to pace the attack.  Lutz scattered four hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

Goslee drove home four runs with her three doubles, and Bernthold also had a 3-3 day with one run scored and one RBI in the 11-hit attack.

Rose-Hulman improved to 8-8 on the season and 2-2 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play, while Hanover dropped to 4-13 overall and 2-2 in league games.  The Fightin' Engineers return to action on Saturday with a home twinbill against Bluffton University.
