Women's Soccer Shuts Out Defiance 3-0

TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology sophomore Haley O'Neil (Batavia, Ill.) scored two goals and had one assist to propel the Fightin' Engineer women's soccer team past Defiance 3-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday.

Senior Rachel Johnstone (Loveland, Ohio) opened the scoring in the sixth minute on a pass from O'Neil to give the Engineers a 1-0 lead they would hold throughout the first half.

O'Neil delivered her fifth assist of the season from the middle of the field to a sprinting Johnstone, who beat the keeper from the right side.

In the second half, O'Neil scored on an unassisted goal in the 54th minute and tallied another score in the 80th minute on a pass from sophomore Helena Bomber (Bargersville, Ind./Center Grove) to secure Rose-Hulman's second straight 3-0 victory and keep the Engineers in first place in the HCAC.

O'Neil scored her first goal of the season after an Amanda Kingman (Plano, Texas/Senior) delivered the ball on a corner throw-in. O'Neil beat her defender to get a one-on-one shot from the right side, as her shot found the top right corner of the net.

Bomber delivered her first assist of the year from the middle to O'Neil for the match's third goal, as O'Neil put it away the shot in the box to the upper right corner.

Sophomore Lucinda Combs (Danville, Ky./Boyle County) recorded nine saves and her single-season school record setting ninth shutout of the season to lead the defensive effort.

The Engineers outshot the Yellow Jackets 17-13 and held a slight advantage on corner kicks, 7-5.

Rose-Hulman improved to 7-2-4 on the season and 3-0 in HCAC play, while Defiance stands 3-8-2 and 0-2-1 in conference matches.  The Fightin' Engineers, on a three-match winning streak and with just one loss since August, host Mount St. Joseph on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
