FRANKLIN, IND. -- The Rose-Hulman men's soccer team kicked off the 2013 season with a solid 3-0 victory over Trine in Friday's Daniel Schuetz Community Classic at Franklin College.
Senior William Senat (Edmond, Okla./North) opened the Fightin' Engineers' scoring with a unassisted goal in the 19th minute to tally the lone goal of the first half and give Rose-Hulman a 1-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, Rose-Hulman freshman Ben Lyon (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) netted his first goal of his collegiate career in the 46th minute, firing the ball just inside the right post after senior teammate John Munson (Bloomington, Ill./University) floated a long ball over the defense for the assist.
Sophomore Marco Cattani (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) connected on Rose-Hulman's final score, netting a goal on a long run down the left side with freshman teammate Nick Kowalkowski (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way) recording the assist.
Rose-Hulman junior goalkeeper Drew Miller (Cincinatti, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) recorded two saves in his first shutout victory of the season to lead the Fightin' Engineer's defense.
The Engineers (1-0) outshot Trine by an 8-4 margin, netting three goals on five shots on goal.
Rose-Hulman returns to the field for Saturday's 5 p.m. matchup with 2012 NCAA Division III national runner-up Ohio Northern.
