Women's Soccer Drops Tough 1-0 Decision to Webster

TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- The Rose-Hulman women's soccer team's defense held tough for nearly 80 minutes but couldn't respond to a late Webster goal, falling to the Gorlocks 1-0 in  the Rose-Hulman Invitational opener at the Intramural Field Friday.

Webster (1-0) broke a scoreless tie when junior Amy Schield found the back of the net via a pass from junior teammate Michelle Scally in the 79th minute, beating R-H sophomore keeper Lucinda Combs (Danville, Ky./Boyle County) on a shot to the left side.

Combs proved to be a wall for the rest of the match, as the sophomore recorded a match-high eight saves, including stops on two point-blank shots by the Gorlocks.

Rose-Hulman (0-1) had a chance to counter with six minutes to play when senior Amanda Kingman (Plano, Texas/Senior) delivered a beautiful cross to the box, but the Fightin' Engineers were not able to capitalize.

Rose-Hulman tallied three shots on goal in the contest, with freshman Natalie Aw (Shoreline, Wash./Shorewood) and sophomore Kate DeMoss (Martinsville, Ind./Roncalli) narrowly missing out on scores for the home team.

Webster outshot the Fightin' Engineers 14-6 in total shots, recording nine shots on goal.

Benedictine topped Franklin 3-0 in the nightcap of the doubleheader, shortened to 74 minutes due to lightning.  The box score is above.

Rose-Hulman returns to the field Saturday for a 5:30 p.m. matchup with Benedictine at Jim Rendel Field.
