Men's Swimming & Diving Wins HCAC Invitational

FRANKLIN, IND. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's swimming and diving team won the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Invitational, while the women placed third in the event at Franklin Community High School on Saturday.

The Fightin' Engineers also scored maximum available points toward the men's all-sports trophy in the HCAC standings with the victory, while the women's finish will contribute to the league Commissioner's Cup.

Rose-Hulman won 17 total events, including 13 men's and four first-place honors.  Seven Fightin' Engineers led the way by winning two events each.

Freshman Pierce Bartine (Katy, Texas/Seven Lakes) claimed the 100-breaststroke (1:02.17) and 200-breaststroke titles (2:17.88) to lead the swimming double winners for the men's squad. 

Other men's swimming double winners included sophomore Matthew King (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) in the 500-free (4:55.57) and the 1,650-free (16:57.90); sophomore Orion Martin (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) in the 100-butterfly (50.78) and 200-freestyle (1:44.23); and senior Andrew Podgorski (Goshen, Ind.) in the 50-freestyle (22.39) and the 100-freestyle (48.48).

The men's individual winners also included freshman Matt Schulstad (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) in the 200-butterfly (1:59.96). 

Sophomore Sam Gould (Greencastle/South Putnam) and sophomore Regen Foote (Jasper) combined for a sweep of the four diving events.  Gould scored 244.40 points in men's one-meter diving and 247.45 in three-meter, while Foote had 211.80 points in women's one-meter and 229.60 points in three-meter.

Freshman Ellie Hong (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) led the women's individual effort with two event victories.  Hong won the 100-backstroke in 58.93 seconds and placed first in the 200-backstroke in 2:09.11.

Rose-Hulman also swept both men's relay events.  The 200-medley relay team of freshman Nate Weber (Kalamazoo, Mich./Portage Central), Podgorski, Martin and sophomore Paul Hintz (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) won in 1:38.35.  The 400-freestyle team of Martin, Hintz, Schulstad and Podgorski also won in 3:15.87.

The Rose-Hulman diving team returns to action on Feb. 7-8 at the CCIW Diving Invitational.  The swimming portion of the squad next competes at the CCIW Swimming Championships on Feb. 13-15.
