NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology junior Kate DeMoss scored four minutes into overtime to lead the women's soccer team past Manchester 1-0 in a key Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon.
DeMoss scored at the 93:43 mark on a shot inside the far post, courtesy of a pass from junior Hayley Gilliam. The score marked the third goal this season for DeMoss.
Junior Lucinda Combs recorded her school record 28th career shutout in the victory with nine saves to lead the defensive effort.
Manchester outshot Rose-Hulman 19-15 in the match, but the Fightin' Engineers also controlled much of the play by taking all five corner kicks on the afternoon.
DeMoss led the Rose-Hulman offense with six shots. Senior Haley O'Neil and freshman Eliska Saiz had three shots each. Emily Willmann led the Manchester defense with six saves, and Katelyn Barta paced the Spartans with five shots.
"We stayed composed and controlled the tempo for most of the game," head coach Amy Helliwell. "We had a great cross from Hayley [Gilliam] and an even better finish from Kate [DeMoss]."
Rose-Hulman improved to 9-3-1 overall and moved into the current top four in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings at 3-1-1 with the victory. Manchester dropped to 6-8 overall and 3-2 in conference play. The Fightin' Engineers host Earlham College on Wednesday.
