HOLLAND, Mich. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology battled No. 4 ranked Calvin College to a scoreless draw in round one of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament, before the nationally ranked Knights advanced by winning a penalty kick shootout 4-3 on Friday night at Hope College.
Rose-Hulman senior goalkeeper Drew Miller capped his career with a school record 36th shutout with the help of a strong defensive effort. Miller recorded six saves in 110 minutes of action to help the Fightin' Engineers keep the match scoreless against a Calvin team that has not lost since the third match of the season.
In penalty kicks, Miller recorded a save on the opening round of penalty kicks to keep the match scoreless. Freshman Austin Webb, sophomore Alex Jansen and freshman Turner Perkins made penalty kicks and were matched by Calvin players to make the score 3-3 entering the final penalty kick.
After a miss by the Engineers, Stephan Hooker scored the game winning penalty kick as the Knights moved on to the second round in the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday. Calvin stands 18-2-2 after their second consecutive draw and second straight penalty kick win, including a victory over Kalamazoo in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association title game on Saturday.
Although Calvin outshot Rose-Hulman 23-8 in the match, the shots-on-goal count was only 7-4 as the match followed the Fightin' Engineers style of contested play and solid team defense. Travis Vegter, with 23 goals this season, led the Calvin offense with seven shots but was held to two shots on goal.
Junior Dieter Schultz fired three shots to lead the Rose-Hulman offense effort, and sophomore Tyler Blankenship contributed two shots to the effort. The Rose-Hulman back line held the match scoreless, and junior Mike Smyser made the biggest individual play of the night by heading a potential Calvin goal away in the second half.
Rose-Hulman completed the season with a record of 14-4-4 and its third trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament in the career of the Fightin' Engineer senior class. The seniors (Miller, Andrew Bartush, Brian Ruane and Fletcher Carlson) compiled a record of 54-21-12 to become the first senior class to reach the NCAA Tournament three times.
