Swimming & Diving Tops Wabash and Manchester

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology claimed 26 first-place finishes in a dominant men's and women's swimming and diving performance against Wabash and Manchester on Saturday at the Sports and Recreation Center.

The men's squad relied on 12 first place finishes to defeat Wabash 181-113 in a battle of two teams ranked in the top 15 of last week's collegeswimming.com NCAA Division III national poll.  Wabash entered the meet ranked No. 6 overall, while Rose-Hulman was No. 17.

The diving team led the effort with three qualifications for the NCAA Division III Diving Regional later this season.  Junior Regen Foote set a new school record and qualified for the NCAA Regionals with a one-meter school record for 11 dives with 411.95 points. 

Junior Sam Gould qualified for the NCAA Division III Diving Regional on both the one-meter and three-meter boards with strong performances.  Gould tallied 298 points in three-meter diving and 285.60 in one-meter diving for six dives.

Junior Orion Martin contributed three individual victories to Rose-Hulman's performance.  Martin won the 50-freestyle (21.90), 100-freestyle (47.23) and the 100-butterfly (50.08).  Freshman Cam Gill added two victories by sweeping the 100-backstroke (53.69) and 200-backstroke (1:58.46) events.

Junior Matthew King won the 1,000-freestyle in a time of 10:09.35, while freshman Patrick King claimed the 200-butterfly in 1:56.56.  Sophomore Pierce Bartine earned top honors in the 200-individual medley (2:00.07), while sophomore Alexander Yaung won the 200-breaststroke in 2:14.93.

Rose-Hulman capped the meet with the 400-freestyle relay team of Gill, Martin, freshman Kirk Dickson and junior Paul Hintz winning in a time of 3:11.74.

The women's squad swept first-place honors in all 15 events to defeat Manchester 170-52 in dual meet action.  Sophomore Lauren McLennan and freshman Bethany Lefeber led the effort with three wins each.  McLennan captured the 50-freestyle (27.19), 200-freestyle (2:10.04) and 200-backstroke (2:30.93) events, while Lefeber won the 100-freestyle (59.27), 100-butterfly (1:04.57) and 500-freestyle (5:42.22). 

Double event winners for the women included senior Celeste Kline in the 200-individual medley (2:30.17) and the 200-butterfly (2:31.28) and sophomore Savannah Rice in the 100-breaststroke (1:16.34) and the 200-breaststroke (2:46.39).  Senior Ashley Schumacher added a victory in the 100-backstroke (1:08.90), and Foote contributed the one-meter diving win.

Rose-Hulman also swept the 200-medley and 400-freestyle relay events.  Lefeber, Rice, Kline and Schumacher combined to win the 200-medley in 2:01.74, while McLennan, Rice, junior Savannah Jay and freshman Ellen Dado won the 400-freestyle relay in 4:14.60.

Rose-Hulman returns to action with another home meet against NCAA Division I Valparaiso University on Friday night at 7 p.m.
