BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's basketball team was tied with regional power Illinois Wesleyan 29-29 at halftime, but the Titans scored 41 second half points to defeat the Fightin' Engineers 70-55 on Saturday, Dec. 20.
Rose-Hulman fell behind 9-2 early on, but battled back to hold a one-point on four occasions. Illinois Wesleyan scored the first 10 points of the second half in three minutes to take a 39-29 lead. The Engineers closed to within two points in the final 20 minutes, but could get no closer.
Senior Gracie Gibbs led Rose-Hulman with a career-high 20 points on 9-13 shooting as well as blocking for Titan shots. Sophomore Josie Schmidt added nine points and six rebounds in 16 minutes off of the bench. Sophomores Abbie Marshall and Jamie Loving each added seven points. In addition, Loving added eight rebounds.
Molly McGraw led Illinois Wesleyan with 25 points.
As a team, the Engineers shot 46.8 percent (22-47) from the field as well as 61.1 percent (11-18) from the free throw line. Illinois Wesleyan converted 25-52 shots from the field and connected on 15-24 free throws.
Rose-Hulman concludes its non-conference season with a 6-4 record. The Engineers open the new year with a game at Bluffton on Jan. 3. After that, the Engineers will return to Hulbert Arena for just the second time all season on Jan. 7 against Earlham.
