WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's basketball team retained the Clabber Girl Trophy for the third consecutive year, defeating St. Mary-of-the-Woods College 66-58 on Wednesday, Dec. 8.

Rose-Hulman took the early lead when sophomore Kristen Belyea connected from downtown to give the Fightin' Engineers a 6-3 advantage with 17:42 to play in the first half. The Pomeroys then went on a 14-9 run over the next ten minutes to take a two-point lead. The Engineers responded, however, by scoring 15 points in the first 7:42 to take a 30-27 advantage into halftime.

St. Mary-of-the-Woods got within a single basket early in the second half, but could not take the lead. Rose-Hulman continued to feed its post players, and a layup from junior Abbie Marshall with 8:08 to play in regulation gave the Engineers' their biggest lead, 58-45.

The Pomeroys scored the game's next nine points, cutting Rose-Hulman's advantage to just four points. Six straight points from senior Gracie Gibbs sealed the Engineers' victory.

Gibbs and Marshall notched their third and second career double-doubles with Gibbs tallying a game-high 17 points and 12 rebounds while Marshall had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Josie Schmidt nearly added a double-double, scoring nine points and grabbing nine boards. Junior Cassidy Cain chipped in seven points and four assists.

Grace Ziegler and Sierra Lopez each had 10 points to lead St. Mary-of-the-Woods.

Rose-Hulman held a 59-40 advantage on the boards. The Engineers shot 33.9 percent (21-62) from the field while the Pomeroys shot 30.9 percent from the field (21-68).

The Engineers improve to 4-2 on the season with the victory. Rose-Hulman opens Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play at home Saturday, Dec. 6, against Transylvania. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
