Baseball Rally Falls Short vs. Illinois Tech

TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology rallied from a 7-0 deficit to tie the score at 7-7, before Illinois Institute of Technology added two more runs to earn a 9-7 non-conference baseball victory on Thursday at Art Nehf Field.

Illinois Tech scored four times in the first inning and added three more runs in the third, before Rose-Hulman scored five times in the fourth inning and twice in the fifth to knot the score.  The Scarlet Hawks added single runs in the sixth and seventh, and Cory Winiecki held Rose-Hulman scoreless in his last four innings of work to secure the win.

Senior Hank Akard (Indianapolis/Ben Davis) and freshman Zach Trusk (Plainfield, Ill./North) had multiple-hit games to lead the Rose-Hulman offense.  Akard had two singles and scored once, while Trusk added a single, double and two runs scored.

Adam Samad led the Illinois Tech offense with a three-run home run in the first inning.  Five Scarlet Hawks had multiple hits in the contest, led by three singles from Michael Malfeo.

Rose-Hulman bashed out five hits in the fourth inning to turn a 7-0 deficit into a 7-5 game.  Sophomore Josh Koutnik (Mount Prospect, Ill./Hersey) opened the frame with a single and took third on a double by Trusk.  Junior Josh Hoeing (Rushville, Ind.) added an RBI single, before sophomore Caleb Kissel (Plainfield, Ill./North) added another run scoring hit.  Senior Andrew Benitez (Mililani, Hawaii) capped the rally with a two-run single.

In the fifth, two walks and a single by sophomore Evan Witsken (Granger/South Bend St. Joseph) plated one run.  Sophomore Nevin Fansher (Noblesville) tied the score with an RBI single, before Illinois Tech later scored twice to earn the win.

Rose-Hulman stands 13-8 on the season, while Illinois Tech has a 9-9 record.  The Fightin' Engineers host Mount St. Joseph in a three-game series this weekend, starting with a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
