Baseball Team Tops MSJ, Moves Into HCAC First Place Tie

TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology moved into a first place tie atop the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball standings with an 11-2 victory over Mount St. Joseph on Sunday at Art Nehf Field.

Rose-Hulman turned a 1-0 lead into a 9-0 edge with back-to-back four-run innings in the fifth and sixth frames.  Sophomore Andrew Stull (Sammamish, Wash./Eastlake) tossed seven strong innings, allowing four strikeouts and two earned runs, to lead the pitching effort and earn his second win of the season.

Offensively, three players had two hits each for the Fightin' Engineers.  Senior Hank Akard (Indianapolis/Ben Davis) slapped two singles, scored twice and had two RBIs.  Sophomore Caleb Kissel (Plainfield, Ill./North) added two a single, a double, scored three times and added two RBIs.  Sophomore Patrick Klima (South Bend, Ind./St. Joseph) added two singles, two RBIs and scored twice.

Senior Andrew Benitez (Mililani, Hawaii) contributed a single and three RBIs to the performance, while junior Josh Hoeing (Rushville, Ind.) smashed a triple.

Rob Shaw and Matt Hofmann led the Mount St. Joseph offense with solo home runs and two hits each.

The Engineers took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a single by Kissel, two bunts and a sacrifice fly by Benitez.  In the fifth, Rose-Hulman scored four times to take control of the contest.

Hoeing opened the fifth-inning rally with a triple and scored on a Klima single.  Akard later singled home Klima, and came around to score on a two RBI single by Benitez.

In the sixth, Rose-Hulman secured the win with four more runs.  Kissel and sophomore Donnie Waters (Franklin, Ind.) provided the big blows with two-run doubles.

Rose-Hulman improved to 16-8 overall and 11-3 in HCAC play, while Mount St. Joseph dropped to 11-14-1 and 6-8 in league games.  The Fightin' Engineers return to action on Tuesday at Franklin College.
