Softball Drops Doubleheader at The Woods

ST. MARY-WOODS, IND. -- St. Mary-of-the-Woods relied on a strong offensive attack to top Rose-Hulman 10-0 and 11-1 in two five-inning nonleague games on Wednesday.

The Pomeroys (21-13) totaled 21 hits on the day to sweep the annual series for the first time since 2012.

Senior Jenna Martinek (Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan) led the Engineer offense with two singles, including the lone hit in the Game 1 loss.

The Fightin' Engineers (13-11) scored their lone run of the day in the third inning of Game 2, when junior Carly Heibel (Fort Wayne, Ind./Lakewood Park Christian) doubled down the right field line with two outs and RHIT trailing, 7-0. Junior Jessica Ahlborn (Houghton, Mich./Houghton) then drilled a single center field which got by the SMWC defense to score Heibel from second to make the score 7-1 SMWC.

Sophomore Marissa Stout (Terre Haute, Ind./South) added a single for the RHIT offense in Game 2.

Carly Painter drilled a three-run home run in Game 1 to end the game for SMWC, while teammate Kirby Schuble blasted a three-run home run of her own in Game 2 to lead the Pomeroy offense.

Rose-Hulman will return to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play when the Fightin' Engineers travel to Mount St. Joseph on Saturday at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader.
