TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology improved to 4-2 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference softball action with a 4-2 and 2-0 doubleheader sweep over Transylvania University on Saturday.
Junior Carly Heibel (Fort Wayne/Lakewood Park Christian) tossed two complete games in the circle, including a game two shutout, to lead the Fightin' Engineer performance.
Heibel allowed four hits and one earned run with four strikeouts in the opener, before tossing a four-hit shutout with three strikeouts in the nightcap.
In the opener, Rose-Hulman rallied from a 2-1 deficit with one run in the third inning and two in the fourth in a 4-2 victory. Heibel blasted a solo home run to knot the score at 1-1, and junior Jessica Ahlborn (Houghton, Mich.) paced the team with two singles and one run scored.
Other key contributors in game one included senior Jenna Martinek (Troy, Mo./Buchanan) with a bases loaded, two-run single for the 4-2 final margin. Sophomore Jett Bender (Monticello, Minn.) and freshman Janel Lake (Okawville, Ill.) added one single and one run scored.
Maddy Rodabaugh led the Transylvania offense with a home run as the opening batter in the game. Lauren Willett added one single and one RBI. Katie Hulsman tossed the complete game for Transylvania.
In game two, Rose-Hulman scored single runs in the second and fourth innings to earn a 2-0 victory. Heibel improved to 5-1 on the season with the win in the circle, and the Fightin' Engineers turned three double plays defensively.
Offensively, senior Allison Bowman (Fort Wayne/Snider) smashed a double and two singles with one run scored to lead the Engineers. Lake pitched in with a single, double and one RBI. Sophomore Marissa Stout (Terre Haute/South Vigo) also scored once and added a single.
Shelby Bailey led the Transylvania game two offense with two singles. Jamie Lutes tossed the complete game for the Pioneers with two strikeouts.
Rose-Hulman improved to 7-5 overall and 4-2 in league play, while Transylvania dropped to 7-17 and 1-3 in conference games. The Fightin' Engineers host Blackburn College in a doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m.
