TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's soccer team won its first game of the 2014 season with a 2-0 shutout of Kalamazoo College on Saturday. Rose-Hulman had a quick turnaround following a 0-0 double overtime scoreless draw with Alma College late on Friday night.
The Fightin' Engineers relied on two goals from sophomore Ben Lyon and a 12-save shutout from senior goalkeeper Drew Miller to secure the victory.
Rose-Hulman took a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute when a pass from freshman Austin Webb found the foot of Lyon who beat Kalamazoo goalkeeper Beau Prey. Lyon added the second goal in the 63rd minute off of a pass from junior Marco Cattani.
Miller, with help from the Rose-Hulman defense, recorded his 24th career shutout and second during the 2014 season.
Kalamazoo outshot Rose-Hulman 19-4 in the contest. Cal Kirchen led the Hornets with six shots while Lyon scored on his two shot to lead the Engineers.
Rose-Hulman, which has yet to allow a goal, improved to 1-0-1 on the season while Kalamazoo dropped to 1-1. The Fightin' Engineers return to action at Greenville College on Wednesday night.
