TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology rimmed out a potential game tying three-pointer at the buzzer as Franklin College withstood a late charge in a 56-53 women's basketball victory on Wednesday night at Hulbert Arena.
The Fightin' Engineers led by as many as 10 points in the contest. Leading 16-6 with 8:33 to play in the first half, the Grizzlies went on a 20-10 run to tie the game 26-26. Junior Cassidy Cain connected on a 12-foot jump shot at the buzzer to give Rose-Hulman the lead at halftime.
Franklin scored the first seven points of the second half and led by as many as eight points (37-29) with 14:53 left in regulation. Nearly nine minutes later, two free throws from freshman Alyzia Dilworth tied the game 43-43. A free throw from sophomore Abbie Marshall gave the Engineers a slim lead with 6:11 to play.
The Grizzlies bounced back to score the game's next seven points. Rose-Hulman needed to foul down the stretch, but after two missed free throws from Mandy Fisher, Marshall grabbed the rebound with the Engineers down three points.
Junior Andi Evers heaved up a three-pointer as time expired which hit off of the back iron.
Marshall led the Engineers offensively with 11 points and seven rebounds. Dilworth also scored in double figures with 10 points. Cain contributed nine points, three assists, and one rebound.
Nichole Thompson, Kayle Comer, and Laruen DeSutter all scored in double figures for Franklin, with 18, 13, and 12 points respectively.
As a team, Rose-Hulman shot 43 percent while the Grizzlies converted 29 percent of their field goal attempts. The Engineers held a distinct advantage in points in the point (18-6) and points off of turnovers (17-12).
"We gave them [Franklin] too many second-chance opportunities," Rose-Hulman head coach Jon Prevo said. "Our team's effort level was high, we just need to be more consistent in crucial situations."
Rose-Hulman dropped to 8-6 overall and 4-3 in league play, while Franklin remained second in the conference at 8-5 and 6-1 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) matchups. The Fightin' Engineers travel to Mount St. Joseph in another HCAC contest on Saturday.
