TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology won 14 men's and six women's events in a strong season opening performance at the Terre Haute Track and Field Double Dual at the Sports & Recreation Center on Friday night.
The men's squad defeated Manchester 109-33 by capturing wins in all 14 events. The women's team narrowly fell 65-51 to the Spartans in a competitive matchup.
The Double Dual also featured Indiana State defeating Illinois State in both men's and women's action as two NCAA Division I Missouri Valley Conference foes faced off.
Sophomore Isaiah Smith led the Fightin' Engineers with two event victories. Smith won the 60-meter dash with the third-fastest time in school history (7.16 seconds) and the 200-meter dash with a mark of 23.31 seconds. Freshman Jordan Moothery added the second-fastest time in school history in the 60-meter dash preliminaries with a mark of 7.11 seconds.
Freshman Josh Hennig captured the 400-meter dash with a mark of 52.09 seconds, and sophomore Brendon Mattiuz ran a winning time of 2:02.29 in the 800 meters. Senior Blake Schulthies rounded out the running sprint event sweep with a 60-meter high hurdles mark of 8.58 seconds. The tandem of Hennig, Smith, Mattiuz and Schulthies wrapped up the night by winning the 4-x-400 meter relay in 3:32.07.
In the distance races, senior Stuart West won the mile in a time of 4:26.39, and junior Jacob Becker took top honors in the 3,000-meter run (8:54.39).
In throwing events, senior Zac Erba won the weight throw (49' 3") and sophomore Andrew Okruch captured top honors in the shot put (48' 11").
Sophomore Josh Blome captured the pole vault with a leap of 14' 5 1/4". In the jumping events, winners included senior Austin Schulthies in the high jump (6' 2 3/4"), sophomore Sterling Mitchell in the long jump (20' 5 3/4") and sophomore Brendan Smyth in the triple jump (40' 11 1/2").
Freshman Gabi Razma led the women's performance with two individual event wins and one runner-up performance. Razma won the 60-meter dash (8.47 seconds) and the 200-meter dash (28.36), while coming home as the runner-up in the triple jump with a mark of 34' 6 3/4". Her triple jump mark ranks second in school history, and the 60-meter mark stands third all-time.
Junior Mallory McDevitt added a victory in the pole vault with the second-best mark in school history (10' 0"). Other women's individual winners included junior Addie Johnson in the 400-meter dash (1:01.95) and freshman Emma Ross in the mile run (5:46.12).
The 4-x-400 meter relay team of Christine Harper, Razma, Johnson and freshman Jaclyn Setina won the final women's event of the evening with a time of 4:21.05.
Rose-Hulman returns to action with its second home meet of the season, the Friday Night Invitational, next weekend at the Sports and Recreation Center.
