TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology puts its 5-0 record on the line with a home matchup against Defiance College on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
The Fightin' Engineers stand 5-0 for the first time since 1987 entering Saturday's matchup. Rose-Hulman is receiving votes in both the d3football.com and American Football Coaches Association weekly top 25 polls and is 2-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
Sophomore Tyler Brutofsky and freshman John Kirby earned national recognition from d3football.com and USA College Football for their efforts last week. Brutofsky had eight solo tackles and two interceptions, while Kirby snagged an interception on the game's key two-point play in a 28-27 win at Bluffton University.
Junior Austin Swenson has completed 128 of 189 passes for 1,542 yards with 19 touchdowns and just 1 interception this season to lead the offense. Junior Alec Fisher (29 rec., 379 yds., 7 TDs) and senior Aaron Abbott (27 rec., 331 yds., 1 TD) entering Saturday's game tied for the school record in career touchdown receptions with 24. Sophomore Kevin Dufauchard has rushed for 449 yards and three touchdowns to lead the ground attack.
Defensively, Mike Henry (26) and Kaelen Garner (24) are the leading tacklers through five games. Connor Kispert has added nine tackles-fpr-loss and four sacks. Alec Thompson paces the squad with two interceptions.
Defiance has a 1-4 record and is 1-1 in HCAC play this season. The Yellow Jackets defeated Hanover 19-14 on Sept. 26 for their first win of the season. Cody Wilson leads the team in rushing yards (141), receiving yards (310) and touchdowns (3). Keandre Gilmer ranks third in the conference in tackles per game.
After Saturday's matchup, Rose-Hulman returns home to face Franklin College on Oct. 24 at 1:30 p.m.
