TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology freshman Charlie Aimone scored a career-high 25 points and buried a game-winning three-pointer with 5.6 seconds left as the Fightin' Engineers topped Franklin College 82-80 in men's college basketball action at Hulbert Arena Wednesday night.
Aimone buried a three-pointer on the left wing to turn Rose-Hulman's 80-79 deficit into an 82-80 advantage. Franklin had one final chance, but a three-pointer by Trey Washington just before the buzzer fell off to the right.
Aimone finished 9-13 from the field with seven rebounds for career-high totals in each category. Senior Matt Loesing added 15 points on 6-8 from the field, senior Jimmy Miller had 14 points on 6-9 from the field, and sophomore Stephen Schueth also reached double figures with 12 points on 8-10 from the foul line.
Franklin's two pronged scoring attack featured Aaron Mann with 31 points and Washington with 26 points. Rose-Hulman shot 56% from the field for the game in a contest that featured tied totals in rebounds (32) and turnovers (16).
Other key contributors for Rose-Hulman included senior Dillon Reynolds with a career-high nine assists; and Tyler Duffy and Wade Stallings with four points each.
Franklin took an 80-79 lead on a three-pointer by Trey Boles with 20.6 seconds remaining. After a timeout, Aimone hit the eventual game winning timeout for the Engineers.
Rose-Hulman led by as many as 12 points at 59-47 with 15:00 left in the second half. The lead remained 11 points at 65-54, before the Grizzlies answered with an 18-6 run to take the edge at 72-71 with 4:45 left.
A pair of free throws by Miller and Aimone gave Rose-Hulman a 77-74 lead, but Washington had a conventional three-pointer to tie the score at 77-77. Loesing put the Engineers ahead 79-77 with a layup that set the stage for the final possessions.
Rose-Hulman improved to 4-3 and 1-1 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play, while Franklin dropped to 0-7 and 0-2 in league games. The Fightin' Engineers return to action at Bluffton University on Saturday.
