TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Key free throw shooting from Bluffton University gave the Beavers a 59-49 victory over the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's basketball team in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) action on Saturday, Feb. 14.
The Fightin' Engineers took a 13-8 lead with nine minutes to play in the first half, when senior Sheree Williams connected on a three-pointer. It would prove to be Rose-Hulman's largest lead of the contest, however, as Bluffton ended the half on an 18-8 run.
In the second half, Rose-Hulman got as close as three points on three occasions, but could not regain the lead.
Sophomore Abbie Marshall led Rose-Hulman with 14 points and four rebounds off the bench. Sophomore Josie Schmidt, who also came off of the bench, was the other Engineer to finish in double figures with 12 points.
Sophomore Jamie Loving and senior Gracie Gibbs chipped in eight and seven rebounds respectively. The two accounted for over half of the Engineers' rebounds.
Macey Sheerer and Taylor Knight led Bluffton with 18 and 13 points respectively. Sheerer also led the Beavers with 12 rebounds.
As a team, Rose-Hulman made 16 of its 47 field goal attempts while Bluffton converted 17-45. With both teams hitting just two triples, the difference came at the free throw line. The Engineers shot 65 percent (15-23) for the game while the Beavers hit on 88 percent (23-26) of their free throw shots.
Rose-Hulman dips to 12-11 on the season with the loss including 8-8 in HCAC play. The Engineers have two games remaining during the regular season, a trip to Franklin on Wednesday, Feb. 18 and senior day against Mount St. Joseph on Saturday, Feb. 21.
