TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology won its fifth consecutive Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men's track and field championship, and the women came home fourth on Sunday at the Sports and Recreation Center.
The men's track and field team combined for 10 conference indoor championships, while the women's team won the 4-x-400 meter relay league title. Rose-Hulman also set an all-time conference record in the HCAC with 296 points in the Indoor Championships.
Senior Stuart West led the Rose-Hulman individual effort with wins in the mile run (4:23.92) and 3,000-meter run (8:58.06). West tallied a new conference record in the 3,000-meter run.
Other running event winners included freshman Josh Hennig in the 400 meters (51.22); sophomore Brendon Mattiuz in the 800 meters (1:58.38), and junior Sam Sobczak in the 5,000 meters (15:28.72).
Rose-Hulman also won a pair of relay events. The 4-x-400 meter team of Adam Wilson, Isaiah Smith, Brayden Betz and Hennig won in a time of 1:31.81. The distance medley relay squad of Chandler Harkins, John Evans, Walt Dearing and Matt Hill added a winning time of 10:50.07.
In field events, Rose-Hulman won three events. Sophomore Nathan Green repeated as HCAC pole vault champion with a mark of 14' 11". Senior Vashon Solomon earned a conference championship in the triple jump with a conference record of 45' 4 1/2". Sophomore Charles Spaeth added a title in the shot put with a mark of 48' 10 3/4".
The women's 4-x-400 meter relay championship team included Christine Harper, Gabi Razma, Jaclyn Setina and Addie Johnson in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference and school record time of 4:09.70.
The men's squad also combined for 11 second-place finishes. In running events, second-place finishers included freshman Jordan Moothery in the 60-meter dash with a school record mark of 6.97; senior Blake Schulthies in both the 60-meter hurdles (8.48) and the 400-meter dash (51.48); senior Ryan Meyer in the mile (4:25.59); junior Jacob Becker in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 15:33.91; and the men's 4-x-200 meter relay (1:31.81).
In field events, runner-up finishers included senior Austin Schulthies in the high jump (6' 2 3/4"); sophomore Josh Blome in the pole vault (14' 5 1/4"); sophomore Brendan Smyth in the triple jump (44' 2"); sophomore Andrew Okruch in the shot put (48' 7 3/4"); and senior Zac Erba in the weight throw (51' 6 3/4").
On the women's side, runner-up finishers included Johnson in the 400-meter dash; Setina in the high jump (5' 4 1/4"); Razma in the triple jump (35' 4"); and junior Mallory McDevitt in the pole vault (10' 0").
Third-place men's finishers included Hill in the 3,000 meters (9:04.81) and sophomore Lucas Schulthies in the pole vault (13' 11 1/4"). On the women's side, the 4-x-200 meter relay team came home in 1:55.14; and Harper in the long jump (15' 10 1/2") for third-place finishes.
Rose-Hulman's men also had the distinction of sweeping the top five finishing positions in the pole vault.
Individuals from the Fightin' Engineers return to action at the Ohio Northern Last Chance Qualifier on March 7.
