TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's tennis team lost its season-opener 6-3 to IU-Southeast at the Wabash Valley Tennis Center on Saturday, Feb. 7.
The Engineers fell behind 3-0 after doubles, losing the second doubles flight in a tiebreak, 9-8 (9-7). Brandon Benedict and Georges Adam lost 8-4 at first doubles while Erin Miller and Joe Kendall fell 8-5 at third doubles.
The Engineers picked up flight victories at second, third, and sixth singles. Adam defeated Jon James 6-3, 6-4 at second singles. Cam Metzger won handily 6-1, 6-2 at third singles while Derek Benedict won his six singles match 6-2, 6-2.
The fourth singles flight between Matt Conrad and Bryson Mills was the only fight to not finish in straight sets. Mills won the first set 6-2, but Conrad battled back to win set two 7-5. Unfortunately for the Engineers, Mills on the decisive third set 6-3.
Rose-Hulman now stands at 0-1 on the season and returns to action next Saturday, Feb. 14 for a home match against Webster. The match is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
