TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Fueled by emotion from Rose-Hulman's annual Pink Game, the Fightin' Engineer women's basketball team completed a sweep of the Manchester Spartans, winning 63-31 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) action on Saturday, Feb. 7.
Breast cancer survivors in the Wabash Valley were honored in a ceremony before the game.
Manchester (10-11, 7-7 HCAC) never held a lead in the contest. Rose-Hulman led 27-14 at halftime and led by as many as 34 points with a minute to play in the game.
Senior Sheree Williams and sophomore Josie Schmidt finished in double digits with 10 points each. Senior Gracie Gibbs led the Engineers in rebounding, grabbing 10 boards. The trio of junior Cassidy Cain, junior Carrie Morris, and freshman Jordan Hagood each finished with three assists.
As a team, Rose-Hulman owned the paint, scoring 27 of its 63 inside. Manchester, on the other hand, scored only 14 points in the paint. The Engineers also held a 41-27 rebounded edge. In addition, Rose-Hulman finished with 17 assists and 14 turnovers, marking the fourth occasion this season the Engineers have notched a positive assist-to-turnover ratio.
The victory propels Rose-Hulman to an 11-10 overall record and a 7-7 mark in HCAC play. The Engineers are now tied for sixth place in the league with four games remaining. At the end of the year, the top six teams make the HCAC Tournament.
Rose-Hulman returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 11, when the Hanover Panthers come to Hulbert Arena for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
