TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology placed six players in double figures and rallied from an 11-point first half deficit to earn an 81-78 men's basketball victory over Manchester University on Saturday.
Sophomore Collin Wojcik came off the bench with 15 points on 4-7 from the field to lead the balanced scoring attack.
Junior Tyler Duffy and senior Corey Povaleri added 14 points each. Duffy dished out seven assists, five rebounds and four steals on 6-11 from the field, while Povaleri added nine rebounds and finished 5-8 from the field.
Junior Jimmy Miller scored 13 points with five rebounds, and junior Matt Loesing added 12 points and five rebounds. Junior Dillon Reynolds came off the bench with 10 points and two assists to round out the double figure scorers.
The balanced offensive effort overcame two outstanding scoring performances from Manchester. Chase Casteel buried seven three-points in a 26-point effort, and Matt Brown added 24 points and four rebounds.
Manchester built a 37-26 lead in the last two minutes of the first half with a hot shooting performance that included eight three-pointers. Rose-Hulman relied on back-to-back three-pointers by Wojcik to close within 40-32 at the half.
In the second half, Rose-Hulman knotted the score at 42-42 on a layup by Povaleri at the 15:01 mark. Manchester answered the challenge to regain a 63-54 edge on a three-pointer by Casteel at the 9:46 mark.
Rose-Hulman roared back with a 12-0 run to gain a 66-63 lead at the 5:54 mark after four straight points from Povaleri. Manchester withstood the charge to regain a 72-69 lead on a layup by Caleb Jackson with 3:04 left.
Rose-Hulman answered with an 8-2 run to regain a 77-74 lead after two baskets from Miller, a layup by Duffy and a Reynolds jumper at the 1:03 mark.
Casteel scored a four-point play to give Manchester a 78-77 edge with 28 seconds remaining after being fouled on a successful three-pointer. The Fightin' Engineers took back the lead on the next possession with a Povaleri layup at the 17-second mark.
Rose-Hulman forced a turnover on the next possession, and Reynolds hit two free throws with 4.2 seconds left to push the Fightin' Engineer lead to 81-78. Manchester had a final chance to inbound with 1.5 seconds left, but the inbounds pass led to a turnover on the last possession.
Rose-Hulman improved to 12-9 and 8-6 in HCAC play, while Manchester dropped to 5-16 and 4-10 in league games. The Fightin' Engineers return to action at Hanover College on Wednesday night.
